As a piano tuner for many years, I have often worked with spruce, a wood that I am familiar with, but I was not very familiar with maple.
As far as what I’ve worked with before, it’s basically just the wooden parts of hammer heads. And even then, they come almost fully manufactured from parts makers, so there’s hardly any processing needed.
This time the wood is arriving in blocks, so I’ll need to cut and carve it. Since there’s no room for error, it makes me nervous.
However… this maple has quite a unique smell. If I had to describe it in words, it’s like… the scent of a distinguished American gentleman… Or at least that’s what I think. I wonder if anyone else has the same impression…?
ピアノ調律師を長年続けてきて、スプルースという材木はよく扱うことがあった親しみのある材木ですが、メイプル🍁(楓)はあまり馴染みがありませんでした。
扱ったことがあるといえば、写真にあるハンマーヘッドの木の部分くらい。しかも部品メーカーがほぼ製品化したものが送られてくるので加工することもほとんどなし。
今回はブロックの状態で届いているので、切ったり削ったり。失敗が許されないので緊張します。
しかし…このメイプルの匂いは独特ですね。言葉で表現するなら、ダンディなアメリカのおじさんの匂い…。のような気がするのですが…。同じ感想の人、いるかな…？
