A French Violin

While learning to make a violin, I’ve needed a specific example to know about its measurements and shape. I like Suzuki violins that sounds greater than many imported ones, but it is said Suzuki was more like mass production than luthier’s hand crafted. And the measurements are a little odd comparing to made by individuals. So I did a lot of research about European violins and chose one from eBay.

There are stories about buying a violin from eBay but I’m not talking about that here. I’m rather focusing its sound.

It was pretty rough when it arrived here. The strings were loose, the sound post wasn’t standing, and many more work to be done. So I did minimum set up to make it sound. The bridge is a Despiau and it has a name on the other side that the violin was set up by a well experienced luthier, whom I searched on the internet and found his website.

It has a label inside but many say it’s not reliable so I’m not talking about the brand.

The most importantly, the sound is not something I have ever heard from Japanese violins. It’s warm and soft but not weak. Feels like the sound spreading wider directions. I didn’t measure, but it sounds as if it contains much more frequencies so the tone is rich. This is just my set up. I wonder how it will bloom its capability as musical instrument.

Great instrument.
